Installation FAQs

I-Q1.    The Windows Installer installation process for the hIOmon software includes several "Custom Installation Options".  What do these options do?

I-A1.    As shown in the figure below, the "Custom Installation Options" allow you to:

  • "Automatically load the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor components".  This option, which is enabled by default and is a recommended option, causes the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components to be automatically loaded as part of the Windows® Installer installation process for the hIOmon software.  Note that you must manually load these hIOmon software components after the Windows Installer installation process completes if you do not select this option; see I-A2 below for more information.

  • "Invoke the hIOmon Automated Monitoring Configuration Setup script".  This option allows you to run the hIOmon "Automated Monitoring Configuration Setup" script as part of the Windows Installer installation process for the hIOmon software.  This VBScript enables you to easily and quickly configure the hIOmon software to monitor specific files of interest, to collect particular types of I/O operation metrics, and to export these metrics to specific hIOmon Manager Export Files.  The script also provides hIOmon software configuration support for the hIOmon "Device and File I/O Performance Analysis Add-On", "Process I/O Performance Analysis Add-On", and the "Fragmented File I/O Operation Metrics Analysis Add-On" (see the "hIOmon Add-On User Guide" document for detailed information about these "hIOmon Add-Ons").  See the "Getting Started" help information for additional information about this script.  Note that this script can also be manually run after the Windows Installer installation process completes.

  • "Install hIOmon Clients only".  This option allows you to install the hIOmon Clients software only (which includes the hIOmon Presentation Client, the hIOmon WMI Browser and WMI support, and the hIOmon CLI support).  Note that the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components will not be installed if this option is selected; consequently, you will not be able to collect I/O operation performance metrics upon this system.  However, the installed hIOmon Clients will enable you to access a hIOmon Manager that is currently running upon another system, so that you can control the operation of the hIOmon software as well as access the I/O operation metrics collected by the hIOmon software upon that system.  Also note that if this option is selected, then the options noted above it will be ignored.

I-Q2.    I have just successfully installed the hIOmon software using the Windows Installer.  What do I do next?

I-A2   The installation of the hIOmon software is usually a one-step (sometimes three-step) process; please refer to the "Installation" section of the hIOmon User Guide for a complete description of the hIOmon software installation process.

After the basic installation of the various hIOmon software components using the Windows Installer (i.e., step 1), the following two steps might be required:

1. Load and initially start the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components.

The Windows Installer installation process for the hIOmon software includes several "Custom Installation Options".  One such option is to have the Windows Installer installation process (as part of its installation of the hIOmon software) automatically load the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components to run as services under Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista.   This "automatic load" installation option is a recommended option (and so is enabled by default).

If the "automatic load" installation option is not enabled as part of the Windows Installer installation process, then you must manually load the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components before you can use the hIOmon software.

To manually load the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor software components, click on the "Manually Load the hIOmon Manager and I/O Monitor" shortcut found within the "hIOmonSI" directory where the hIOmon software was installed as part of the Windows Installer installation process.  This shortcut invokes the hIOmon "Service Installation" program that performs the actual load and start of the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor programs; the hIOmon "Service Installation" program will also, via this shortcut, automatically load and install the "performance counters" required to provide the "Windows Performance/System Monitor Support" and automatically both compile/load the hIOmon WMI MOF file (into the WMI Repository) and register the hIOmonWMI DLL component, both of which are required for the hIOmon WMI Support.

The Windows 2000/2003/2008/XP/Vista System Event Log "Application Log" can be viewed to see the result of the hIOmon "Service Installation" program invocation.  You should see a number of entries (with a source of "hIOmonSI") that indicate whether or not the hIOmon Service Installation programs (which was invoked as the result of clicking on this shortcut) was able to successfully install and load the various hIOmon software components.

2. Install the Sun Java Virtual Machine (if necessary).

The hIOmon Presentation Client is a Java application.  If you intend to use the hIOmon Presentation Client, then the computer upon which you run the hIOmon Presentation Client must have version 1.5.0 (or higher) of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed for the supported Windows operating systems.  Note that the JVM is only required by the hIOmon Presentation Client; the hIOmon Manager, the hIOmon I/O Monitor and the hIOmon WMI Support components do not require the JVM to execute.  If you do not use the hIOmon Presentation Client or already have the required JRE JVM version installed, then you do not need to perform this step.  If you do need to install the JVM, then you can download the latest JVM from the Sun Java web site.

After successfully completing the hIOmon software installation described above, you are ready to run the hIOmon Presentation Client, the hIOmon WMI Browser and the other hIOmon clients.  See the "Getting Started" help information for further instructions.

I-Q3.    Does the hIOmon installation process set up the hIOmon Manager and hIOmon I/O Monitor components to be automatically started when the computer system starts?

I-A3.    The hIOmon "Service Installation" program (see I-A2 above) does load the hIOmon Manager so that it will automatically be started when Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista starts.  While the hIOmon I/O Monitor is loaded such that it will not be automatically started by Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista, the hIOmon Manager is configured by default (by the hIOmon "Service Installation" process) so that the hIOmon Manager will automatically start its associated hIOmon I/O Monitor when the hIOmon Manager is started.

The hIOmon Presentation Client can also be used to manually start the hIOmon I/O Monitor (see the hIOmon Presentation Client "Actions -> Start/Stop Monitor" menu display) and to enable/disable the hIOmon Manager's automatic start of the hIOmon I/O Monitor when the hIOmon Manager is started (see the hIOmon Presentation Client "Edit -> Setup Options -> Monitor StartUp" menu display)  The hIOmon CLI support as well as the hIOmon WMI Browser and WMI support can additionally be used to enable/disable the hIOmon Manager's "Auto-Start" options.

I-Q4.    I have installed a trial version of the hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor.  When will it expire?

I-A4.    Use the hIOmon Presentation Client to find out the expiration date for a particular hIOmon Manager (and its associated hIOmon I/O Monitor).  Select the "Help -> About" menu item from the main (initial) hIOmon Presentation Client display window.  Then click on the "Details" button at the bottom of the "About" display window; this will bring up a "hIOmon Details" display where you can view additional detailed information about the selected hIOmon Manager.  Use the "Selected hIOmon Manager" drop-down box at the top of the display to select a particular hIOmon Manager of interest; if the desired hIOmon Manager is not shown within the drop-down box, simply enter, within the "Selected hIOmon Manager" box, the name (or IP address) of the particular computer server upon which the desired hIOmon Manager is running.  Be sure to hit the "enter" key on the keyboard after you have typed the name (or IP address) within the "Selected hIOmon Manager" drop-down box.  A message box will pop up indicating that the hIOmon Presentation Client is trying to connect to the selected hIOmon Manager.

The hIOmon Details display provides detailed information such the version number of the selected hIOmon Manager and its associated hIOmon I/O Monitor.  This detailed information also includes license information for the selected hIOmon Manager, such as the hIOmon version type, licensing options, and the expiration date.

Both the hIOmon CLI support (-q mgr) and the hIOmon WMI Browser ("About hIOmon" menu option) can also be used to display the hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor expiration date as well as hIOmon version information.

NOTE:  hIOmon will cease to operate when the indicated expiration date is reached.  The expiration date can be extended only by purchasing (or renewing) the licensed version of hIOmon.
