hIOmon WMI Browser Screen Shots - Filter Options |
hIOmon uses "filters" to represent those particular files whose I/O operation performance you want to monitor. The hIOmon WMI Browser provides an easy and simple means of defining these filters and selecting their associated files. Each of the selected file names (of files to be monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor) is considered to be a "filter". That is, each file name represents a filter in that the hIOmon I/O Monitor will match the specified name against the file I/O operations it observes to determine whether or not the I/O operation is to be monitored (i.e., whether or not I/O performance metrics are to be collected for the I/O operation, and if so, the type of performance metrics that is to be collected). Filters can be combined into groups called "Filter Selections"; this allows individual groups of "filters" to be defined (with each Filter Selection representing a distinct group of files to be monitored). Below is an actual screen shot of a Filter Selection called "WMIsampleFilters" (as display by the hIOmon WMI Browser "View - Filter Selections" menu option): |

Filter Selection Name List As shown in the screen shot above, "WMIsampleFilters" is one of the fifty-five (55) Filter Selections that are available at the selected hIOmon Manager (which is running upon the server called "hyperIO1"). All of the filters within the WMIsampleFilters Filter Selection correspond to files accessible by the hyperIO1 server. The WMIsampleFilters Filter Selection is maintained by the hIOmon Manager upon the hyperIO1 server. The drop-down box below the "Get FS Name List" button includes the names of the 55 Filter Selections. Default Filter Selection The gray background behind the WMIsampleFilters (within the drop-down box below the "Get FS Name List" button) indicates that the WMIsampleFilters Filter Selection is the "default" Filter Selection (that is, if the hIOmon Manager has been configured, via its "Auto-Start" options, to automatically start its associated hIOmon I/O Monitor and begin file I/O operation performance monitoring when the hIOmon Manager is started, then the WMIsampleFilters Filter Selection, as the "default" Filter Selection, will be used by the hIOmon I/O Monitor to determine which particular files are to be monitored). Note that the "Default" column value (within the display table) is "True" (which also indicates that WMIsampleFilters is the default Filter Selection). Loaded/Active Filter Selection The WMIsampleFilters Filter Selection is additionally shown in red letters (within the drop-down box below the "Get FS Name List" button), which indicates that WMIsampleFilters is the currently active Filter Selection (i.e., the Filter Selection that is currently loaded within the hIOmon I/O Monitor and as such is the basis for determining which particular file I/O operations are to be monitored for which particular files along with the type of performance information that is to be collected for the respective file I/O operation). Note that the "Loaded" column value (within the display table) is "True" (which also indicates that the WMIsampleFilters is the active Filter Selection). Filter Selection Name Display The drop-down box below the "Get FS Name List" button contains the names of all Filter Selections that are available at the selected hIOmon Manager. When you select a particular Filter Selection within the drop-down box, basic information about the selected Filter Selection is displayed within the display table immediately below the drop-box. The display table includes the name of the Filter Selection and whether or not it is the default and/or the currently loaded Filter Selection. The number of "filters" along with the names of the filters (i.e., the file path names) that comprise the Filter Selection are also included within the display table. In addition, the names of the devices associated with any Device Summaries are included within the display table. See "Device Summary Display Table" below for a explanation of the "Device Summary". Filter Display Table The hIOmon WMI Browser "View - Filter Selections" menu option also enables you to display the specific filter options associated with the individual filters that comprise a particular Filter Selection. These filter options indicate whether or not file "Read I/O operations", for example, are to be monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor. By default, the Filter Display Table shows, for each filter included within the Filter Selection, the associated name of the filter (i.e., file path name), the time period for the periodic offload (if requested) of the summarized file I/O operation performance metrics, whether or not the summarized performance metrics are to be offloaded on a "File-Alert" basis (i.e., when a specified threshold has been reached/detected by the hIOmon I/O Monitor), and whether or not file Read, Write, and/or Control (e.g., file open and file close requests) I/O operations are to the monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor. You can also explicitly include other filter options (e.g., particular alert thresholds) to be shown with the Filter Display Table by using the "Add Filter Option to Table" button together with the "Select a Filter option" drop-down box. Click here for a screen shot illustrating the Filter Display Table. Device Summary Filter Display Table A "Device Summary" pertains to all Filters (within a Filter Selection) that are associated with the same device and for which an aggregate, collective sum of summarized file I/O operation performance metrics for all of these files is to be offloaded on a periodic basis or when a "File-Close" or "File-Alert" (i.e., when a specified threshold has been reached/detected by the hIOmon I/O Monitor) occurs for any of the files. In other words, a Device Summary for a particular device represents the overall sum of all summarized file I/O operation performance metrics for all files (and only those files) being monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor and residing upon the respective device. The hIOmon WMI Browser "View - Filter Selections" menu option also enables you to display the specific filter options for any Device Summaries associated a particular Filter Selection. The Device Summary Filter Display Table shows, for each Device Summary, the associated device name, whether or not the Device Summary is to be periodically offloaded from the hIOmon I/O Monitor (and the corresponding time period) or instead offloaded on a File-Close or File-Alert basis, etc. Click here for a screen shot illustrating the Device Summary Filter Display Table. The hIOmon WMI Browser allows you to quickly and easily specify the particular type of file I/O operation performance information that you want and need. |
