Using the Base Excel Chart/Graphing Functions

Product Info

The hIOmon "Device and File I/O Performance Analysis" Add-On provides a Microsoft® Office Excel template that includes a hIOmon Excel macro, which can be used to easily and quickly generate Excel Pivot Table/Charts based upon the summary I/O operation performance metrics that have been loaded into the hIOmon Excel template worksheet.  The basic charting/graphing and data (e.g., sort and autofilter) functions already included within Excel can also be used upon the hIOmon Excel template worksheet.

For example, the figure below displays an Excel workbook that makes use of the Excel standard charting/graphing function.  This workbook was generated by:

  1. Importing a hIOmon Manager Export File (name "PerfAnalysisExportFile.csv") into the hIOmon Excel template.

  2. Using the hIOmon "CoalesceSummaryMetrics" Excel macro to consolidate the summary I/O operation performance metrics into related periodic time intervals for each of the individual files.

  3. Using the hIOmon "AddCalcMetrics" macro to add the "Overall Read Avg Response Time" metric into the worksheet.

  4. Finally using the Excel "Chart Wizard" to generate a graph depicting the read I/O operation average response time  (i.e., the calculated "Overall Read Avg Response Time" metric) for the "E:\pagefile.sys" file over the course of the four successive period time intervals.

Specific information about the hIOmon Excel template/macros mentioned above is provided within the "hIOmon Add-On User Guide" document.

The Excel data functions (such as sort and autofilter) can also be used as shown in the figure below.  In this example, the hIOmon "CoalesceSummaryMetrics" Excel macro was used to consolidate the summary I/O operation performance metrics upon an "overall totals" basis; that is, consolidate the rows of summary I/O operation performance metrics into a single overall total for each individual file (or device).

The Excel "Autofilter" feature was then used to identify the "Top Ten" rows based upon the "Read IOP Count" metric (column F).  The results were then sorted (using the Excel "sort" data option) and the displayed using the Excel Chart Wizard into a "column" chart type.

In summary, the basic charting/graphing and data (e.g., sort and autofilter) functions already included within Excel together with the hIOmon Excel template/macros enable you to easily and quickly generate a variety of charts and graphs that can help illustrate the specific hIOmon metrics of particular interest to you.
